Carla Bruni-Sarkozy pregnant, says president's father (VIDEO)

France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy delivers a speech during the launching of her foundation Sortir de l'illetrisme, which fights illiteracy, on May 17, 2011, at the Centre Pompidou modern art museum in Paris.

Nicolas Sarkozy's father says the first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, is pregnant, apparently confirming weeks of speculation.

"The two do not want to know the gender in advance, but I'm sure it will be a girl and as beautiful as Carla," Pal Sarkozy told a German newspaper, Bild, as reported in Reuters.

There has been much speculation in France that the first lady is pregnant, particularly after she covered her stomach with a shawl during a newspaper interview earlier this month and when asked if she was pregnant said, "my lips are sealed to protect something..."

Bruni-Sarkozy, 43, said she didn’t want to risk derailing her husband’s political agenda with private matters.

The usually slender and always stylish Bruni wore a loose-fitting shirt and jacket during a TV appearance Monday.

There is also speculation that the first couple might be expecting twins.

Sarkozy is the most unpopular president in France and years, and his supporters hope a pregnancy could boost his reelection chances.

His campaign also received a boost this week after his main rival, the head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, was arrested and charged with attempted rape after a hotel maid accused him of a naked ambush.
