Man arrested over bomb threat at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport

A man has been arrested after making a bomb threat at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport this morning, the BBC reported. The scare prompted authorities to evacuate most of the airport, one of Europe's busiest.

The suspect apparently locked himself in a public bathroom and claimed to have explosives. 

He subsequently surrendered to police and is not believed to pose a threat, a military police spokesman told Xinhua news agency. Officers are still investigating whether he was carrying any explosives in his luggage.

Police received a telephone call warning of a bomb around 11:00 AM Monday morning and decided to evacuate the main Terminals 1 and 2 immediately as a precaution.

They have since been reopened, the Associated Press reported, though airport authorities are warning that flights could be delayed or cancelled throughout the day.

Police have opened a criminal investigation into the incident.

On 25 December 2009, a Nigerian student, known as the "underwear bomber," managed to smuggle explosives on to a flight from Schiphol to Detroit, after earlier flying from Lagos, Nigeria's biggest city.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty to attempting to blow up the Northwest Airlines jet – and is due to be sentenced on Thursday.
