India steps up security along Bangladesh border
NEW DELHI, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Indian authorities Friday said that security has been stepped up along the international border with Bangladesh in the wake of the political uncertainty in the neighboring country.
"We have asked our soldiers to keep a close watch on the border situation. Our men remained vigilant round-the-clock along the borders, specially where a substantial number of people reside across the border," India's Border Security Force's official Bhaskar Rawat told the media.
He added: "After the assembly elections in the five Indian states are over, the border guards deployed on poll duties would be re-deployed along the borders to further reinforce vigilance along the sensitive borders."
India shares a 4,000-km border with Bangladesh in the east and the northeast.
Bangladesh has been in political turmoil with the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance engaged into a violent agitation, demanding postponement of the general elections.
