Bahrain major opposition vows to boycott upcoming polls
MANAMA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Bahrain's largest opposition group announced on Tuesday that it would boycott the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections.
Al Wefaq National Islamic Society's Secretary-General Shaikh Ali Salman made the announcement, saying that "There will be no participation in any coming elections until there is a radical reform that makes the people the source of all powers."
He also called for the release of alleged political prisoners and opposition leaders before elections that are expected to be held by the end of October.
Eighteen MPs from Al Wefaq resigned in parliament in February 2011. Opposition groups also boycotted the by-election in September 2011 to fill the seats vacated by them.
