4 police killed in S. Afghan bombing
LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Four Afghan police were killed with one cop wounded Tuesday in a bomb attack in southern province of Helmand, source said on Wednesday.
"Four Afghan Civil Order policemen were killed and one policeman wounded following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Sangin district late Tuesday," the provincial government spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Xinhua.
Helmand is notorious for poppy growing and is a known Taliban hotbed.
A surge in attacks has been witnessed in the country since the Taliban insurgent group launched a yearly rebel offensive against Afghan security forces and more than 51,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country in mid-May.
The war-torn country is due to take over the responsibility for its own security from foreign troops by the end of the year.
