Do Ghana proud once again: opposition leader urges Black Stars

ACCRA, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Former presidential candidate of Ghana' s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday urged the Black Stars to make Ghana proud as it makes its third consecutive appearance at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this month.

He said football pundits, all over the world, have always bet their money on Ghana to be one of the first teams to exit the World Cup at the group stages.

In its maiden appearance in 2006, when Ghana was grouped with Italy, Czech Republic and the USA, the odds were heavily stacked against the West Africans.

However, the can-do-spirit of the Ghanaian was clearly made manifest and the Black Stars placed second in the group and qualified for the round of 16.

Similarly in 2010, against the likes of Germany, Serbia and Australia, Ghana progressed to the quarter finals stage, a step further to what was achieved in 2006.

"I have no doubt whatsoever that, again, in Brazil, with a group consisting of Germany, Portugal and the USA, the Black Stars will shine even brighter," he said in a statement.

"I believe strongly that with unity, determination and hard work from Captain Asamoah Gyan and our players, the Kwasi Appiah-led technical team and management, and the unflinching support of us all, the Black Stars will make us proud," he said.

The Black Stars thrashed South Korea 4-0 on Monday in Miami, USA in their final warm-up game ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana will play the United States of America on June 16 before coming up against Germany and Portugal in a Group G.

The team is expected to touch down in Brazil on Wednesday ahead of the football' s biggest tournament.
