Bollywood actress accuses former boyfriend of sexually assaulting her
NEW DELHI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- A well-known Bollywood actress has leveled charges of sexual assault against her industrialist ex- boyfriend, both co-owners of a cricket team in the multi-million- dollar Indian Premier League (IPL).
In a complaint to the police, the Bollywood starlet, Preity Zinta, has accused Ness Wadia, owner of Go Air private airlines, of molesting her and outraging her modesty in front of many people during this year's edition of the IPL cricketing tournament in Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai last month.
Both Zinta and her former boyfriend, who separated in 2009, own Kings XI Punjab team.
In a statement issued on the case, Zinta said Saturday: "This is a very difficult time for me and I would like to request the media to please respect my privacy regarding this matter. My intention is not to harm any one but only to protect myself."
She added: "It saddens me that no one at work or around stood up for me when I was abused and insulted publicly. I was left with no option but to take this stern step. Ironically, what happened at Wankhede is being diluted by every other fabricated story about my character."
According to local media reports, the Mumbai Police has asked cricket authorities for close-circuit TV footage of the stadium to ascertain the facts of the actress' complaint, as well as planning to question witnesses named by Zinta.
Mumbai Police chief Rakesh Maria said: "The investigation is going on. The complaint has been registered. We will be recording the statements of the witnesses."
Meanwhile, Maharashtra State Women's Commission has demanded action against Wadia.
However, no arrests have been made so far.
Wadia has described the allegations as "false and baseless."
If convicted, he can face up to two years in jail.
