Five Cuban boxers to attend Pan Am Sports Festival

HAVANA, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Cuba picked five national boxing medalists for the tournament of the discipline at the Pan American Sports Festival, the national commission said here Thursday.

The island's team for the competition on July 17-20 in Mexico City is headed by the national silver medalist in the flyweight category Jorge Luis Cordero, said the commission cited by the sports site "Jit".

Other called up athletes are the lightweight Jorge Moiran, the welter Reinier Palacios, the cruiser Frank Sanchez, and the super heavyweight Yoandris Maceo.

The boxing event of the Pan American Sports Festival in Mexico convenes 66 contestants from 17 countries.

Cuba will attend the first stage of the Festival from July 11 to 30 with 210 competitors in 20 of the total 23 disciplines.

The Festival has two other stages in August (two sports) and September (eight), it is endorsed by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and brings together about 5,000 athletes from 41 countries.
