(Sports) Sri Lanka's top cricketer announces retirement
COLOMBO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A leading Sri Lankan cricketer on Monday announced his retirement from the longer version of game.
The Sri Lanka cricket board said that Mahela Jayawardene, a former captain, has tendered his resignation from Test cricket.
In a letter to the chief executive officer of the board, Jayawardene has stated that he would like to retire from Test cricket after the forthcoming Test series against South Africa and Pakistan.
Jayawardene has said that "it was not an easy decision to make given that it has been a great privilege and honor representing my country during the past 18 years, but I believe this is the right time."
The cricket board said that Jayawardene has reiterated that he is fully committed to playing One Day International cricket for Sri Lanka.
Jayawardene has already retired from Twenty20 cricket and is expected to play One Day International cricket till the world cup next year.
