LONDON, July 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 660 suspected paedophiles have been arrested in a six-month operation across Britain, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said Wednesday.
The operation which targeted people accessing indecent images of children online was conducted by NCA and 45 police forces across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
NCA said the 660 suspects were from all walks of life, including doctors, teachers, scout leaders, care workers and former police officers, and among them, 39 people were registered sex offenders.
The 660 would face charges ranging from possessing indecent images of children to serious sexual assault. Fortunately, more than 400 children across the country have been safeguarded, NCA said.
"This is the first time the UK has had the capability to coordinate a single targeted operation of this nature," said Phil Gormley, deputy director general of NCA. "Our aim was to protect children who were victims of, or might be at risk of, sexual exploitation."
The NCA didn't reveal the methods of tracking down suspects in order to use the same tactics in other similar crimes.
