1st LD: Suicide bombers, gunmen storm Afghan police chief house
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 27 (Xinhua) -- At least eight militants were killed after Taliban suicide bombers and gunmen launched an attack on the provincial police chief house in Spinboldak district of southern Afghan province of Kandahar on Sunday morning, sources said.
"At least 10 militants were involved in the attack which took place at around 7:30 a.m. local time. Two bombers detonated their suicide jackets close to the building. Six of the attackers were shot dead by the security forces," a district security source told Xinhua.
He said two militants seized an empty school building and they were fighting the security forces.
There are no immediate reports about casualties on the side of security forces as the battle is still underway, the source said.
Security forces have cordoned off the area as precautionary measures. It was not known whether the provincial police chief General Abdul Raziq was at the building when the attack took place.
The Taliban insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack.
