Commentary Submission Guidelines

Mission:

Over the past three years, GlobalPost has brought to life a news report that is filling the void in international coverage by U.S. news organizations. Globalpost.com is now firmly established in the top rank of U.S. general interest national news sites. To expand its commitment to its mission, GlobalPost has created a new section called Commentary that will offer a diversity of thought, analysis and ideas reflecting perspectives from around the world.

The purpose of GlobalPost.com is to publish insightful commentary and expert analysis by individuals worldwide who bring authoritative knowledge and personal experience to a wide range of international topics. Commentary invites submissions from contributors who can share their knowledge and experience with a growing audience seeking to be fully informed about international developments. We seek perspectives that are fresh and ideas that may not be familiar to American audiences or that are not available in the U.S. news media.

Articles posted on Commentary will be expected to meet the same rigorous standards as GlobalPost’s news report: fair, intelligent, comprehensive and free of partisanship. Authors submitting articles to the Commentary Editor should be qualified to write about their subjects. Pieces should be readable and substantive. At their core, they should have an idea or a thoughtful explanation. The globalpost.com audience has a strong interest in reading articles that engage, educate, enlighten and inform. Commentary welcomes a point of view, to be sure, but it is not a place for opinion advocating a cause or political or ideological agendas.

We envision an extensive network of contributors from among scholars, journalists, government officials, corporations, worker organizations, think tanks, non-profits, and activists. Many of our contributors will reside in foreign countries and can offer a perspective not often presented in the U.S. news media.

Guidelines:

Bob Giles, former curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University and a long-time newspaper editor, will serve as commentary editor for GlobalPost. Articles and queries about commentary submissions should be sent by email to Bob at bgiles@globalpost.com

In inviting contributors to Commentary, we ask you to acknowledge and respect the following guidelines:

  • Articles should be 600-800 words.
  • Writers should provide contact information, a brief bio and a statement of their credentials to comment on the subject.
  • Submissions from multiple authors are welcome.
  • We want pieces that are exclusive to GlobalPost.

GlobalPost does not pay for pieces but publication on Commentary offers writers a special opportunity to have their work read by a growing international audience.

Articles can be amplified by a chart, a graph or photographs.

GlobalPost will acknowledge by return email each submission to Commentary.

GlobalPost editors will do a minimum amount of editing, such as correct errors of fact or grammar, on articles selected for posting. It is our expectation we will receive reasoned pieces of commentary that do not require major changes or reworking.

A brief biographical note and an explanation of the writer’s qualifications on the topic will be posted with the article.

Requests for anonymity cannot be granted and the use of pseudonyms is not permitted.

We look forward to working with you.
