Chile's salmon industry swims south, and into controversy.

PUERTO NATALES, Chile — The classic battle between economic development and the environment is raging in Patagonia — the pristine, southernmost region of Chile.

This frontier market fish tale has it all: hard-charging hippies, hungry fisherman, a mysterious virus and, of course, plenty of salmon.

So what will happen to this booming $2 billion industry, and a key Chilean export?
