Japan arrests China fishing boat captain amid island row

Japan's coastguard arrested the captain of a Chinese fishing boat on suspicion of fishing in the country's exclusive economic zone Saturday amid a festering territorial row between the two countries.

The coral fishing boat with a crew of 13 was stopped by a coastguard patrol in waters some 46 kilometres (29 miles) northeast of Miyako island in the Okinawan chain, the local branch of the Japan coastguard said.

The captain was arrested on suspicion of fishing in the exclusive maritime zone without permission from Japan, the coastguard said.

The incident occurred at the height of the simmering dispute over Tokyo-administered Senkaku islands, which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus.
