URGENT ¥¥¥ 'Terror pushed back' but 'not defeated', Hollande tells Mali

President Francois Hollande said Saturday that France's lightning military intervention against Islamist rebels occupying northern Mali had "pushed back terrorism" but not defeated it.

"Terrorism has been pushed back, it has been chased away, but it has not been defeated yet," Hollande told a large crowd of Malians in front of the independence monument in the capital of the former French colony, where troops are working to secure the rebels' final stronghold, the northeastern town of Kidal.
