Brothers charged in Briton's murder in Reunion

Two brothers aged 16 and 26 were charged Thursday in the 2011 murder of a British security agent working on a merchant ship that had stopped on the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion.

Carl Davies, 33, was found dead in November 2011 in a gutter on the outskirts of the island's capital Saint-Denis, after an evening spent in several bars along with two other British security agents who arrived with him on the same ship, the Atlantic Trader.

Prosecutors said Thursday the brothers are suspected of having attacked Davies in order to rob him. An autopsy showed he received several blows to the head and a knife wound to the stomach.

Lawyers for the brothers said they denied any involvement in his killing.

Davies, an ex-Royal Marine who served in Northern Ireland and Iraq, left the military in 2005 and became a teacher at Sittingbourne in Kent, southeast England.
