President Barack Obama on Monday will nominate top air quality official Gina McCarthy to head the US Environmental Protection Agency, a White House official told AFP.

Obama is also to name Ernest Moniz, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to lead the US Energy Department, the official said.

McCarthy currently is tasked at the EPA, among other duties, with overseeing greenhouse gas regulations.

In addition to teaching at the prestigious MIT, Moniz served during the administration of President Bill Clinton as undersecretary of energy.

The president is due to make the announcements at the same time he introduces his new budget chief, Walmart Foundation head Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

The president is scheduled to announce Burwell's nomination to lead the Office of Management and Budget at 10:15 am (1515 GMT) in the East Room of the White Housel.

Burwell is a former OMB deputy director under president Bill Clinton from 1998 to 2001.
