New Zealander Hamish Rutherford's 171 against England in the first Test at University Oval on Friday was the seventh-highest debut score in the 136 years of Test cricket history.
But Rutherford's dismissal meant Reginald "Tip" Foster's 287 for England against Australia in Sydney in 1903 remained unchallenged as the highest score by a Test debutant.
Mathew Sinclair remains New Zealand's top-scoring debutant, posting 214 against the West Indies in Wellington in 1999.
Rutherford, 23, scored 22 fours and three sixes in his first Test innings before being caught off the bowling of James Anderson after 340 minutes at the crease.
