Hope Solo, goalkeeper for the US women's national football team, is expected to be sidelined for three to four months after left wrist surgery, the US Soccer Federation announced on Friday.

Solo, who has played on the US squad since 2001 and was a member of last year's Olympic gold medal team, underwent successful surgery on Thursday to repair torn left wrist cartilage. She had been playing with the nagging injury.

The American women are in Portugal for the Algarve Cup tournament.

Solo was set to play for the Seattle Reign of the National Women's Soccer League that begins play next month, the third attempt to launch a top-level women's football league in the United States.

The injury likely means Solo will miss at least the first half of the new league's season.
