US stocks slip but Dow hits new record by a whisker

US stocks closed mostly lower Tuesday in quiet trade, but the Dow closed at a record high for the sixth straight day, by a whisker.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.46 points (0.01 percent) at 14,448.75.

The broad-market S&P 500 fell 3.78 points (0.24 percent) to 1,552.44 and the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite dropped 10.57 points (0.32 percent) to 3,242.30.

Equity markets struggled to move higher "as investors take a breather from the recent rally," Wells Fargo Advisors said in a market note.
