Kobe Bryant severely sprained his left ankle in the last minute of Wednesday night's 96-92 loss to the Atlanta Hawks and is out indefinitely, the Los Angeles Lakers announced.
Bryant tried to tie the game on a baseline jumper when he came down on Dahntay Jones' foot.
The 15-time NBA all-star Bryant missed the shot and dropped to the court in pain. He eventually got up and walked off under his own power. X-rays proved to be negative.
Bryant shot 11-of-33 from the field against the Hawks and finished with 31 points on the night.
After the game, Bryant blasted the referees saying on his Twitter feed that shooters need to be protected better.
"#dangerousplay that should have been called. Period," Bryant tweeted.
Jones shot back via his Twitter account: "Tape doesn't lie. Ankle was turned on the floor after the leg kick out that knocked him off balance. I would never try to hurt the man."
Bryant has carried the Lakers on his back for most of this season and is one of the top scorers in the NBA with a 27.5 per game average.
