Quebec bishops extend invitation to Pope Francis

The bishops of Quebec on Friday congratulated Pope Francis on his election, inviting him to emulate the late pope John Paul II by making a trip to Canada.

The bishops noted that Francis had already visited the French-speaking province in 2008 when he attended the Eucharistic Congress.

"Maybe we have the pleasure of welcoming you back with us in the near future," the bishops said in a statement.

Francis became the first pope to hail from Latin America when he was anointed at the Vatican on Wednesday.

John Paul II is the only pope to have visited Canada, making three trips in 1984, 1987 and 2002. He visited Quebec for three days during his first visit.
