Football: Extra $50m to build World Cup stadium - press

The Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, one of the stadiums being built for the 2014 World Cup, will cost close to $50 million more than originally planned, Brazilian media claimed on Saturday.

Initially costed at around $296 million when the construction deal between the Bahia state authorities and two private firms was signed in January 2010, an extra $50 million will now have to be found.

The consortium involved admitted that the extra cost was caused by "FIFA's new technical expectations" while O Globo newspaper reported that a new pitch would have to be laid.
