Athletics: Kenyan Korir shocks Merga for men's cross title

Kenya's Japhet Korir pulled off a shock victory in the men's world cross-country race here on Sunday, striking early on the last lap to leave Ethiopia's defending champion Imane Merga in his wake.

Korir, who was only sixth in the Kenyan trials, finished the gruelling, undulating 12km course around the Myslecinek Park in 32min 45sec, having built up a convincing lead at the start of the sixth and final lap.

Merga claimed silver, with Teklemariam Medhin of Eritrea taking bronze.
