Racing: Animal Kingdom wins Dubai World Cup

Animal Kingdom won the $10 million Dubai World Cup, the world's richest race, here on Saturday.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby winner (11/2), trained by Australian Graham Motion and ridden by Joel Rosario, beat home English raider Red Cadeaux by two lengths while another English-trained runner Planteur was third.

One of the owners, Barry Irwin, who recently sold the horse to John Messara to stand at stud in Australia at Arrowfield Stud, said he had expected another great race from his injury-prone star.

"It has been up down and up and down with this horse," he said.

"I always thought he had another great race in him and it almost came in the Breeders' Cup Mile last year but it has certainly come true here."

Rosario earned praise from Irwin after he had come in for criticism on a previous ride on the horse.

"As bone-headed a race as he rode previously he gave him a great ride now."
