Moroccan police arrested nearly 200 people in clashes before a football match in Casablanca during which shops and public transport were damaged, the interior ministry said on Friday.

The incidents on Thursday began as FAR Rabat fans arrived in Casablanca for a match against Raja Casablanca, some of them attacking shops and damaging cars, buses and trams, an AFP correspondent said.

The interior ministry condemned what it termed "acts of vandalism and the destruction of public and private property," after the fans arrived at Casablanca train station from the capital.

Investigations were underway to find those responsible for the violence, it said, adding that all necessary security measures had been taken ahead of the match between the top two teams in Morocco's championship, which ended 1-1.
