Obama to make statement after gun reform defeat

President Barack Obama, who pledged to do everything he could to enact new gun laws after the Newtown massacre, will make a statement at 2130 GMT following Wednesday's failure of a bid in the Senate.

The statement in the White House Rose Garden will take place after a proposal to expand background checks for gun owners, the sole significant measure still with a chance of passage, was blocked by opponents in the Senate.
