Newly-elected Napolitano says Italy in 'difficult situation'

Italy's Giorgio Napolitano, who was re-elected president on Saturday to tackle a political crisis that has dragged on since elections in February, said the recession-hit country faced a "difficult situation" and was in "critical time".

"We must all bear in mind, as I have tried to do... the difficult situation of the country," Napolitano said at a brief ceremony in the presidential palace where he was handed the official results of the election in parliament.
