Potential Australian medallists at next year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games will be the major beneficiaries of a $3 million funding boost, the Australian Commonwealth Games Association said on Sunday.
The Australian Sports Commission has announced a Aus$2 million ($2.05 million) injection into the direct athlete support scheme, with the ACGA kicking in an extra Aus$1 million ($1.02 million).
More than 600 athletes who have earned less than Aus$60,000 a year over the past four years are eligible for the funding.
Australian Sports Commission chairman John Wylie said the annual investment in the scheme was now Aus$11.4 million ($11.7 million).
"It is vital support is delivered direct to athletes at the right time in their pathway to enable a commitment to pursue sporting excellence," Wylie said.
"The (direct athlete support) scheme is all about providing targeted and means-tested financial support for our most deserving elite athletes that are not accessing the strong financial returns that some sports can from commercial broadcast contracts."
