40 percent of Nigeria town razed after clashes

Nearly half of a remote Nigerian town was destroyed by fire after fierce clashes between troops and suspected Islamists that left dozens of people dead, a rescue official told AFP Monday.

"Forty percent of the town has been gutted by fire. Many residents are still unaccounted for and for now it is assumed that they fled into the bush," said the rescue official, who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to discuss the scale of the violence in the northeastern town of Baga.
