Jamie Hahn, a prominent North Carolina political consultant, has been fatally stabbed by a longtime friend of her husband, police say. The suspect, Jonathan Broyhill, had even been the best man at the couple's 2009 wedding.

While the possible crime is still under investigation, some people say that a possible motive is missing money. The suspect had worked for Sky Blue Strategies, Jamie Hahn’s political consulting firm,  the Raleigh News & Observer reported. While he worked there, he was accused of producing some inconsistent campaign finance reports.

“Some of the things that Jon said about the campaign finances were inconsistent with other information,” Former Democratic US Rep. Brad Miller told the Observer. “It’s probably the case that Jamie was asking questions on behalf of the campaign about campaign finances. I think it’s bound to be part of the investigation of Jon’s motive.”

Broyhill had kept the books for Jamie Hahn’s campaigns, WTVD reported. Police are charging him with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

“We lost a beautiful and loving wife, daughter and friend. We all lost a pure and brave spirit," the victim's family said  in a statement
