Tim Tebow was released by the New York Jets on Monday, after the quarterback once popular for his evangelical views never meshed in a season with the National Football League club.

Tebow arrived in a hail of celebrity 13 months ago after leading the Denver Broncos to a surprise division title and playoff upset of Pittsburgh in 2011.

He departed three days after the Jets selected quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL Draft, giving them six quarterbacks on the roster -- including 2012 starter Mark Sanchez -- until they dumped Tebow.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped."

In 12 games last season, Tebow threw just eight passes and completed only six for 39 yards while running 32 times for 102 yards.

Tebow played his first two NFL seasons for Denver, but after his 2011 heroics the Broncos signed Peyton Manning following his release by Indianapolis. Denver then traded Tebow to the Jets for two 2012 draft picks.
