CORRECTED: Police escort Islamist protests leader out of Dhaka

An Islamist leader who organised mass protests in Bangladesh was driven out of Dhaka under police escort Monday before being put on a plane to the second city Chittagong, a senior security official told AFP.

Police insisted that Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, the veteran leader of the Hefajat-e-Islam movement, was not arrested but left his madrassa in Dhaka of his own accord.

"He has begun his journey to Dhaka airport in the presence of police," said Mahfuzul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka police.
