Cricket: New Zealand's Southee suffers injury

New Zealand paceman Tim Southee will take no further part in the tourists' ongoing warm-up match against the England Lions at Leicester because of a foot injury, a team statement issued Saturday said.

However, a team spokesman said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson was confident the 24-year-old would be available for selection for the first Test against England at Lord's starting on Thursday.

Southee bowled a short spell on the third day of the four-day match against the Lions on Saturday, having got through 14 overs at Grace Road on Friday.

He was due to see a specialist later Saturday to assess the injury.

"Black Caps head coach Mike Hesson said he was confident that Southee would be fit and available for selection for the first Investec Test starting at Lord's on Thursday," a New Zealand Cricket statement said.
