Thirty years after winning their last NBA title, the Philadelphia 76ers are turning to former Houston Rockets executive Sam Hinkie to revive championship hopes.

The 76ers announced on Tuesday that Hinkie had been hired as the team's new president of basketball operations and general manager. He spent the past three years as executive vice president of basketball operations for the Rockets.

"I believe (this) to be an important step in building a high-performance organization," 76ers managing owner Josh Harris said. "Sam is a proven innovator and holds values that align with those of our ownership group.

"Sam's experience, judgment, and his analytical approach make us confident that he is the right leader to build a foundation for long-term success -- with the goal of ultimately contending for a championship -- here in Philadelphia."

The 76ers went 34-48 this season, missing the playoffs, and until last year had not won a playoff series since 2003. They last reached the NBA Finals in 2001, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Hinkie's first major job will be to replace Doug Collins, who resigned after three seasons coaching the 76ers.

Philadelphia obtained center Andrew Bynum from the Lakers as part of a four-team blockbuster trade deal last August, but Bynum never played a game for the 76ers this season because of knee injuries.

Hinkie brought an analytical data approach to analyzing NBA talent under Rockets owner Les Alexander and general manager Daryl Morey. He will use that plan to decide upon personnel around which to rebuild the 76ers.

"I agreed to come lead the Sixers because the first, and to my mind, the most important building block is in place: A thoughtful ownership group committed to building a basketball operation that is data-driven, strategic and relentlessly innovative," Hinkie said.

"The challenge ahead of us is real but I am invigorated to build something lasting for Philadelphia."
