US Boy Scouts to allow gay youths, not leaders

The Boy Scouts of America said Friday it will allow openly gay youths to join the organization while maintaining a ban on adult leaders, after a vote at its annual meeting in Texas.

The resolution will go into force on January 1, 2014. Sixty-one percent of the estimated 1,400 delegates to the meeting in Grapevine, Texas voted to end a ban that for decades has barred open homosexuality in the movement.
