Bayer Leverkusen confirmed on Thursday that they have signed South Korean international Son Heung-min on a five-year deal as the Bundesliga club continued a busy day in the transfer market.

Leverkusen declined to reveal how much they paid domestic rivals Hamburg for the player but estimates put the deal at approximately 10 million euros ($13.3 million, £8.49 million).

The 20-year-old came up through the youth system at Hamburg after signing at the age of 16 and can now look forward to Champions League football after Leverkusen clinched third place this season in the German top flight.

"Son Heung-min is exactly the kind of player we wanted for our young team," said Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Voller.

"He is fast, explosive, technically strong and has a good shot. He is going to help us achieve our goals in the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League," continued the former German international.

The international striker poached 12 goals in 33 matches last season and attracted the interest of several English clubs before opting for Leverkusen.

Earlier on Thursday, the club confirmed they had sold German international Andre Schuerrle to Chelsea for a reported 21 million euros ($28 million, £18 million).
