Independiente, one of Argentina's most famous clubs and seven times winners of the Copa Libertadores, were relegated for the first time in their history on Saturday.
Their fate was sealed when they were defeated 1-0 by San Lorenzo in the penultimate round of first division matches.
Angel Correa scored the only goal in the 59th minute which condemned Independiente to the drop, just two years after another storied Argentine club, River Plate, were also relegated for the first time.
"I am beaten, but that's it, that's football," said Julio Grondona, the club's president.
Independiente won seven of their Copa Libertadores titles between 1964 and 1984.
