Sunderland on Wednesday announced the signing of Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 25-year-old, a former Italy under-21 international, has signed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light and cost Sunderland an undisclosed transfer fee reported to be around £2 million ($3.1 million, 2.4 million euros).

Sunderland sold first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to Liverpool in a £9 million deal last month.

Mannone is expected to provide cover for Republic of Ireland international Keiren Westwood, but he said he would not be content with a place on the bench.

"Of course, every player knows they have competition," Mannone told the Sunderland website.

"We live in a world of competition. I will work and do my best to be in the first XI, and then the manager will decide. All I can do is try to show what I am capable of."

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has already been busy in the transfer window, with Valentin Roberge, Modibo Diakite, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson and Duncan Watmore having all joined the club since the end of last season.
