The wife of US Secretary of State John Kerry was moved to a rehabilitation hospital Thursday after doctors said her condition had improved following a seizure.

Teresa Heinz Kerry, 74, left Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she had been treated since falling ill on Sunday, Kerry's personal spokesman Glen Johnson said in a statement.

Doctors also upgraded her condition from "fair" to "good," meaning she could move to the city's specialist Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital to focus on her recovery, Johnson said.

"Doctors have concluded that Mrs. Heinz Kerry suffered a seizure on Sunday, but they are still determining its precise cause," he said, adding "many possibilities have been ruled out," such as stroke, heart attack or a brain tumor.

Kerry, 69, will split his time between Boston and Washington and will resume his official travel schedule as the top US diplomat "soon," Johnson added.

The secretary of state also repeated his thanks for the many messages of support, saying: "Let me confirm: It helps you get better."

"We are blessed to have so many people care about Teresa, and by the continued grace of God and the prayer of everybody, she will soon share herself just how much she appreciates every last expression of kindness."

Heinz Kerry will focus on "completing her recovery and ensuring the quickest possible return to her family and civic life" during her stay at Spaulding, Johnson added.

The Kerry family praised the doctors as well as the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and ambulance services that initially cared for Heinz Kerry when she fell ill at their home on Nantucket Island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Kerry had briefly dashed down to Washington to host the opening of long-planned annual US-China talks and had become emotional as he spoke of being "humbled" by the outpouring of support.

The couple have been married for 18 years and have five children between them from previous marriages.
