Boxing: Lomachenko eyes professional status

Ukraine boxing star Vasyl Lomachenko will sign this week a contract with the Top Rank professional boxing promotion company based in Las Vegas, local media reported Friday.

"The two-time Olympic champion Lomachenko will sign a contract with Top Rank company before the end of this week," information site reported.

"Lomachenko's team are currently studying the contract, which Top Rank have sent the 25-year-old boxer. Sources within the team said Lomachenko would receive around two million dollars a year."

Mikhail Zavyalov, the president of Ukraine's National League of Professional Boxing, said he believed the featherweight fighter had a bright future in professional boxing.

"I believe in Vasyl (Lomachenko), in his star," Zavyalov told AFP. "He's a great talent."

"He will start his professional career in the 57kg category. He told me that he was planning to try his skills also in the 60kg category."

Lomachenko has earlier told Ukraine's press that he was set to take on his first professional fight in October.

The left-hander, who was born in the Odessa region, won gold medals at 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He has also won two world boxing titles in 2009 and 2011, along with European championship's gold medal in 2008.

Lomachenko has an impressive amateur record losing his only bout to Russia's Albert Selimov in the 2007 world championship final.
