European data agencies press EU over US surveillance programme

European data protection agencies have asked the European Commission to help evaluate the impact of US electronic surveillance on Europeans, the French CNIL agency said Monday.

Following information disclosed by US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, European data protection agencies "consider they should evaluate the exact impact of the PRISM programme on the privacy and data of European citizens," and have written to the European Commission for its help to get information from the United States, said CNIL in a statement.
