Liverpool centre back Sebastian Coates will undergo surgery on the right knee which he injured while playing for Uruguay in last week's friendly against Japan, his national team announced on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old joined Liverpool two seasons ago but has only been used sparingly, with Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure deployed in central defence for Liverpool's opening Premier League win against Stoke at the weekend.
Coates, born in Montevideo of a Scottish father and Uruguayan mother, joined Liverpool in August 2011 after Uruguay won the Copa America.
He is set for surgery on Friday in Sao Paulo.
