Tennis: 'Who are you?' - top women's seeds' US Open rivals

AFP Sports guide to first round opponents of the leading women's contenders at the US Open, which gets underway on Monday:

Serena Williams (USA x1) v Francesca Schiavone (ITA)

- former French Open champion Schiavone is an ex-world number seven but now stands at 56. The 33-year-old first played in New York in 1999 and was a quarter-finalist in 2003 and 2010. Has beaten Williams twice in seven meetings, but both of those victories came on clay.

Dinah Pfizenmaier (GER) v Victoria Azarenka (BLR x2)

- 21-year-old Pfizenmaier is 99 in the world having made her debut in the top 100 this month. Enjoyed a solid claycourt season, making the third round at the French Open and quarter-finals in Palermo. Is making her US Open main draw debut having lost in the first round of qualifying in 2012. Lost her only previous meeting with Azarenka in the second round of the French Open last year, where she won just two games.

Agnieszka Radwanska (POL x3) v Silvia Soler-Espinosa (ESP)

- Soler-Espinosa, the 25-year-old world number 69, has endured a miserable August on North American hard courts, losing in qualifying at Toronto, Cincinnati and New Haven. The Spaniard has made the third round at the US Open for the last two years, but lost her only meeting with Radwanska at Miami in 2012.
