Two militants of the powerful Shiite Hezbollah movement were killed on Saturday in a firefight with members of a Sunni clan in eastern Lebanon, a security official told AFP.

"Members of the Shiah (Sunni Muslim) family opened fire at a Hezbollah checkpoint in the centre of Baalbek, provoking militants to return fire," the official said.

"The incident let to clashes that killed two Hezbollah members and wounded five people," the official said, adding that the injured were members of the Sunni family as well as passersby.

The incident was the second this week in Baalbek, a stronghold of the powerful Shiite movement across the border from Syria.

Lebanon is deeply divided over the 30-month war in Syria.

Hezbollah has send militants to Syria help the army of President Bashar al-Assad crush a Sunni-led armed revolt against, which most Sunni Muslims in Lebanon support.

On Wednesday Hezbollah militants traded fire with Shiah clan members at the same checkpoint. Two passersby and a Hezbollah members were wounded.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the shootings.

Hezbollah has set up checkpoints in the Baalbek region after deadly bombings that tore through its main southern Beirut stronghold in July and August.

Fifty people were wounded in the first attack and 27 killed in the second.
