Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero produced his trademark magic to inspire Sydney FC to a 2-0 win over the Newcastle Jets to kick off Australia's A-League season on Friday.
Del Piero picked up where he left off last season with the opening goal in the 36th minute and then laid on the second goal for teammate Joel Chianese on the hour to register an emphatic win.
Del Piero, who scored 14 goals in his maiden A-League campaign last season, was the clear-cut man-of-the-match.
He displayed delightful footwork and balance to create his opening scoring chance, putting his foot on the ball and deftly engineering an opening and then expertly sliding the ball across goalkeeper Mark Birighitti into the far corner of the net.
Zenon Caravella was dispossessed by Del Piero in the leadup to Sydney's second goal before laying off the ball to Chianese, who lashed home.
