Pakistan, chasing a target of 302, were 118-1 at tea on the fifth and final day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Mohammad Hafeez (56) and Ahmed Shehzad (53) were at the crease, with Pakistan still needing another 184 runs for a win and bat out the possible 33 overs for a draw, the most likely result.
Earlier, Sri Lanka declared their second innings at 480-5 with Angelo Mathews scoring a career-best 157 not out and Prasanna Jayaawardene unbeaten 63.
Junaid Khan finished with 3-93 and Bilawal Bhatti took 2-146.
The second of three Tests starts in Dubai on January 8.
