Europe has two queens, five kings, two princes and a grand duke, making a total of 10 hereditary monarchies, including Spain's Felipe VI, who was sworn in on Thursday:

- BELGIUM:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male or female.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Belgium.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Philippe, King of the Belgians, 54, who acceded to the throne on July 21, 2013 after the abdication of his father Albert II.

HEIR: Elisabeth, 12

- DENMARK:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male or female.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Oldenburg.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Queen Margrethe II, 74.

HEIR: Frederik, 46.

- LIECHTENSTEIN:

SUCCESSION: All male descendents have priority.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Liechtenstein.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Prince Hans-Adam II, 69.

HEIR: Alois, 46, prince regent since 2004.

- LUXEMBOURG:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male or female.

ROYAL FAMILY: The second House of Nassau.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Grand Duke Henri, 59.

HEIR: Guillaume, 32.

- MONACO:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Grimaldi.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Prince Albert II, 56.

HEIR: Albert's sister Caroline, 57, pending the announced birth of a child to Albert and his wife Charlene towards the end of the year.

- NETHERLANDS:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male or female offspring.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Orange-Nassau.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Willem-Alexander, 47, who took the throne on April 30, 2013 after the abdication of his mother, Beatrix.

HEIR: His eldest daughter Catharina-Amalia, 10.

- NORWAY:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male or female.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Oldenburg.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: King Harald V, 77.

HEIR: Haakon Magnus, 40.

- SPAIN:

SUCCESSION: Males have priority.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Bourbon.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: King Felipe VI, 46, who was sworn in on Thursday after the abdication of his father Juan Carlos ending a reign that began in 1975.

HEIR: Leonor, 8, Felipe's daughter, unless her parents have a son.

- SWEDEN:

SUCCESSION: The oldest male or female.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Bernadotte.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: King Carl XVI Gustaf, 68.

HEIR: Victoria, 36.

- UNITED KINGDOM:

SUCCESSION: The system has been changed to the oldest male or female.

Prince George, born to Prince William and his wife Catherine on July 29 2013, is third in line to the throne.

ROYAL FAMILY: The House of Windsor.

CURRENT SOVEREIGN: Queen Elizabeth II, 88, who is also head of the Commonwealth and the Church of England.
