Orlando Pirates defeated Kaizer Chiefs 6-5 on penalties in Soweto Saturday after a goalless South African pre-season match with a difference.

The starting line-ups for the annual match-up that an international brewer bankrolls were chosen by club supporters via mobile phones and the Internet.

Pirates and Chiefs fans also made one second-half substitution each through mobile-phone voting and one supporter from each side sat in the team dug-outs.

The match demonstrated the pulling power of the most popular South African football clubs with the 90,000-seat Soccer City stadium packed.

Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka wasted the best regulation-time chance as his mid-second half penalty rebounded off the crossbar.

Maluleka also struck the bar during an 18-kick shootout settled when Pirates defender Thabo Matlaba beat Chiefs skipper Itumeleng Khune.

The domestic season kicks off next weekend with the $760,000 (570,000 euros) winners-takes-all Top 8 Cup quarter-finals followed by the first league fixtures a week later.
