The latest installment of the street-racing action film series grossed $256.53 million its opening weekend, May 25/26, announces Rentrak.
Released in 60 different territories on its opening weekend, "Fast and Furious 6" really put the hammer down, leaving the previous episode's opening weekend showing far behind in the dust: the fifth installment in this blockbuster action series grossed only $109.6 million its first weekend in theaters.
The sixth installment has, moreover, made the worldwide charts for opening weekend returns: its $256.53 million puts it in 16th place, ousting that slot's previous holder, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ($250m).
Released in four territories, "The Hangover Part III" got off to a relatively sluggish start, grossing $61.62 million on its opening weekend, as against $177.8m for the previous installment of this comedy franchise.
Meanwhile, "Epic: The Battle of the Secret Kingdom" spread from 16 to 35 territories its second weekend in commercial theaters, notching it up a rung on the revenue charts: The animated picture ranked third at $57.30m in box office receipts.
And last week's leader, "Star Trek Into Darkness," came in fourth, with $51.10m in global revenue.
